How to Choose CCTV for Your Business: A Practical Guide
Unsure which CCTV to pick for your shop, office, or warehouse? A practical guide to choosing cameras, resolution, storage, and installation so your business is truly protected.
CCTV is more than “just mounting a camera.” The wrong system produces blurry footage, blind spots, or storage that fills up before you need it. Here’s a practical guide to choosing CCTV for your business.
1. Define the goal and coverage points
Start with the question: what do you want to see? Entrances, the cashier, the warehouse, the parking area, or all of it? Map the risk points first — the number and type of cameras follow the need, not the other way around.
2. Pick the right camera type
- Indoor vs outdoor. Outdoor cameras need weatherproof housing.
- Dome vs bullet. Dome is more discreet; bullet is more visible (a deterrent).
- Angle & zoom. Wide areas need wide angles; faces/plates need focus.
3. Mind the resolution
Resolution decides how clearly you capture key details like faces and license plates. Too low, and the footage is useless when you need it. Match resolution to the distance and detail you want to capture.
4. Don’t forget storage
Footage needs to be kept long enough (e.g. 14–30 days). The higher the resolution & camera count, the more storage you need. Make sure the DVR/NVR and hard-disk capacity match.
5. Remote and night access
Modern systems let you monitor from your phone anytime. Also make sure cameras have good night vision — many incidents happen in the dark.
6. Correct installation is crucial
Even great cameras are useless if mounted at the wrong angle, with messy cabling, or within easy reach of vandals. Professional installation ensures optimal coverage, tidy & secure cabling, and a system that actually works when you need it.
Bonus: integration
CCTV can do more than record. Paired with access control and attendance, you get an end-to-end security system — one that can even connect to your business software.
